Caregiver Support

Description: There are so many people out there giving care for their elderly parents, grandchildren or disabled relative. When I became one of them, I needed a support group who could help me do my job properly, so I started one at our library.

Specifics: I contacted the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) in our area. We are unincorporated so I had to go to the next largest city for AAA. They sent someone twice each month for two months to get us started. They had advice, pamphlets and contacts for us. Don’t meet at mealtime, as the caregiver is usually busy at this time. Afternoons at naptime is a great time to meet because this is when they have a few minutes. Don’t meet for longer than an hour.

Notes: Let all speak and ask questions, don’t let one person get all the attention.

Experience with Program: When I was no longer a caregiver, I missed going to the meetings and keeping up with the other caregivers. Our group finally fizzled out because we all lost our loved one. Keep your literature because people will remember you had this group and will come ask for help and you can give them the literature.
